Before you pay for an expensive repair on an old unit, here is what actually makes financial sense. The simple rule: if a part costs more than half the price of a new unit, replace it. On units over 10 years old we use a stricter 30–40% line. We earn nothing on a replacement, so the advice is straight.

Over 11 years, each expensive fault is a sign the unit is near the end. Salt air on the coast (the maresia) corrodes the outdoor unit faster, so older AC near the sea wears out sooner. A new unit with a marine-grade coil cuts the electricity bill noticeably and ends the cycle of repeat emergency call-outs.

R-410A now costs far more per kilo than it did a few years ago, while R-32 has been getting cheaper. Supplies in the Algarve are expected to tighten before 2030, with longer waits inland.
